Blu-ray Review: Disney Unleashes HD Assault of Animated Films

Lady and the Tramp II

CHICAGO – Even Disney’s animated canon has a few films that aren’t going to get the marketing push or special edition treatment like “Finding Nemo” and “Cinderella” will get before the end of the year. And yet there are some hidden gems deep in the catalog of the most influential and important film studio of all time. The Mouse House just released seven films on five Blu-rays and I can guarantee you that at least one will meet the needs of your family when it’s time to turn on the electric babysitter. Blu-ray Review: Disney Releases Some Modern Classics in Latest Wave

High Fidelity

CHICAGO – Through their ownership of Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures, Disney has released a stellar wave of catalog titles this week, including at least three comedies that I would call great, two of John Cusack’s best performances, and an ’80s comedy that many people point to as one of the faves of their childhood. Blu-ray Review: ‘The Lion King 1 1/2,’ ‘The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride’

The Lion King 1.5

CHICAGO – Disney’s “The Lion King” is one of the most beloved properties in the history of the influential movie studio. It was such a phenomenon that it spawned a number of spin-offs, including a Broadway show and two straight-to-video sequels, “The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride” (1998) and “The Lion King 1 1/2” (2004). The two mediocre sequels were available in a “Lion King” Blu-ray box set but have just been made available solo for the first time. Both are just OK, good for the little ones who have seen the original movie 100 times but otherwise for hardcore Disney collectors only.

Blu-ray Review: Disney’s Classic ‘Lady and the Tramp’ Resurfaces in HD

Lady and the Tramp

CHICAGO – “Lady and the Tramp” has been somewhat forgotten by time. When people think of Disney, their mind usually goes one of two places — to the classic early day mouse house films like “Dumbo” or “Bambi” or to the comeback films like “The Little Mermaid” or “The Lion King.” The mid-section of the canon seems to be getting lost, including films like “Peter Pan,” “The Sword in the Stone,” “The Jungle Book,” and the recently-released-to-Blu-ray “Lady and the Tramp.”

The Avengers -- Black Widow

CHICAGO – Are you one of the millions of people that watched the Super Bowl yesterday, including the Super Bowl ads? Well, even if you were, there are new extended versions of the trailers you saw yesterday now available for your viewing pleasure. I mean, at $3 million per 30 second ad, it would have been costly for every film to have a one-minute-plus trailer.
