Film Review: ‘Warcraft’ Tries, But Eventually Has Got No Game
Submitted by PatrickMcD on June 10, 2016 - 8:16amCHICAGO – The best that can be said for the video game adaptation “Warcraft” is that it’s not the incoherent, CGI heavy and Michael-Bay-type nightmare it could have been. It’s still somewhat incoherent – full of computer generated cannon fodder – but I am surprised and happy to report it did not induce any headaches, even in pointless 3D.

Film Review: ‘When the Game Stands Tall’ a Sermonizing Snooze
Submitted by PatrickMcD on August 22, 2014 - 7:12pmCHICAGO – “When The Game Stands Tall” has more sermons than a month of Sundays. Its heart is in the right place, but it’s more likely to put its audience to sleep than bring it to its feet. By now the tropes of the inspirational sports drama have become as familiar as the West Coast Offense, but this film can’t effectively figure out how to execute them.
Film Review: Frustrating ‘At Any Price’ with Dennis Quaid
Submitted by BrianTT on May 3, 2013 - 9:40amCHICAGO – Writer/director Ramin Bahrani is interested not in agendas, special effects, or broad statements. He makes films about characters, including the widely acclaimed “Chop Shop,” “Man Push Cart,” and “Goodbye Solo.”
Film Review: ‘John Dies at the End’ Kills Its Own Creativity
Submitted by BrianTT on February 6, 2013 - 11:23amCHICAGO – You’re at a party. It’s getting late. Chemicals have been ingested, booze has been imbibed, and conversation has been exhausted. You spot an interesting looking fella in the corner and he says he has a story to tell you. Maybe it’s the rush of something different, but the first half hour of that story is fascinating, filled with potential and creative in so many ways.

Blu-Ray Review: Steven Soderbergh’s Excellent ‘The Informant!’ With Matt Damon
Submitted by BrianTT on February 23, 2010 - 12:07pmCHICAGO – Steven Soderbergh is arguably the most important American filmmaker working today and his “The Informant!” with Matt Damon, just released on Blu-ray and DVD, is a great piece of evidence to support that argument. He continues to bring traditional stories to life in continuously unique, interesting ways.
TV Review: ABC’s ‘The Deep End’ is Shockingly Shallow
Submitted by BrianTT on January 21, 2010 - 2:13pmCHICAGO – “The Deep End” is yet another legal show about young stars in their field trying to do what’s right within the system and keep their heads above water at a high-powered firm. To say we’ve seen the set-up of ABC’s “The Deep End” a dozen times before would be a massive understatement. The question is what the writers and cast do within the tried-and-true structure. The answer is nothing at all.
