Blu-Ray Review: Searing ‘Naked’ Remains One of Mike Leigh’s Best
Submitted by BrianTT on July 19, 2011 - 3:40pmCHICAGO – Mike Leigh is now widely recognized as one of the best living directors, delivering yet another critically-acclaimed gem last year in the excellent “Another Year” (also recently-released on Blu-ray and DVD). Before “Secrets and Lies,” “Vera Drake,” and “Happy-Go-Lucky,” there was a searing, riveting howl at the moon known as “Naked,” the first film that really drew international attention to both Leigh and star David Thewlis. The film was recently given the upgrade treatment by Criterion, releasing it on Blu-ray for the first time.

Film Review: Meditative ‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’
Submitted by BrianTT on April 15, 2011 - 8:34amRating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” opens with one of its most striking, memorable, and essential images. A buffalo stands in a forest at what appears to be dusk, as we can see him only in shadow. He moves slowly around a tree, almost ghostly, before escaping and running through a field and into a forest. As the film unfolds after this unusual prologue, one can trace its themes back to the power of that image — as the natural and spiritual worlds seem to intertwine in the picture of a majestic creature.

DVD Review: ‘Lorna’s Silence’ Casts Quietly Hypnotic Spell
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 13, 2010 - 4:15pmCHICAGO – Silence speaks volumes in the cinema of Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. Their characters are often young people living on society’s fringes, who keep their thoughts internalized rather than discuss them out loud. There is no music, no narration, and none of the usual cinematic conventions employed to tell the audience what to think or how to feel.
Blu-Ray Review: Palme d’Or Winner ‘The Class’ Gets Great Release
Submitted by BrianTT on August 17, 2009 - 1:20pmCHICAGO – It’s truly amazing how very few films not in the English language find audiences in this country. A film as universally acclaimed as “The Class,” the winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and a nominee for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, should have been able to find an audience, but the fact is that most people skipped it in theaters and I worry they will on Blu-Ray and DVD as well. Don’t miss this one.
