TV Review: ‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’ Builds Up Steam With Second, Third Episodes
Submitted by BrianTT on July 15, 2011 - 12:38pmCHICAGO – We didn’t get the screener in time to give you a heads up about the series premiere of Starz’s “Torchwood: Miracle Day” but we have seen episodes two and three and have some good news to end this long week — if you liked the first episode, don’t worry. It definitely doesn’t drop in quality. And if you worried a bit after that premiere that this wasn’t the same “Torchwood” you knew and loved, fret not, the program starts to really get into gear by the end of the third chapter and there’s little reason to be concerned.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘American: The Bill Hicks Story’ Sheds Light on a Landmark Comic
Submitted by mattmovieman on June 8, 2011 - 8:34amCHICAGO – The funniest jokes are the ones that ring true. They aren’t merely punch-lines. Cathartic laughs are earned not through formulaic quips but through candid observations both startling and relatable. I often find myself feeling awestruck in the presence of a great comic, simply because of their willingness to say what we’ve all thought but never dared to mention in public.
TV Review: Riveting Season Premiere of BBC’s ‘Doctor Who’
Submitted by BrianTT on April 23, 2011 - 12:14pmCHICAGO – BBC America has been blanketing major markets with advertising for tonight’s premiere of the new season of “Doctor Who,” debuting for the first time on the same weekend as it does in the United Kingdom.
TV Review: Great Cast Nearly Rescues Deeply Flawed ‘Survivors’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 11, 2010 - 7:42pmCHICAGO – Who knew the end of the world would be so dull? BBC America makes a rare misstep this weekend with the debut of “Survivors,” an ensemble show with a strong cast and timely concept but self-serious writing that rarely clicks into anything entertaining in its premiere.
DVD Review: More Mature, Darker ‘Robin Hood’ Returns to Sherwood Forest
Submitted by BrianTT on January 22, 2010 - 2:50pmCHICAGO – It’s an old-fashioned phrase for an old-fashioned show but the one I keep thinking of regarding BBC’s incredibly enjoyable “Robin Hood,” the third season of which is now on DVD, is “rollicking entertainment”. Whatever that means to you, “Robin Hood” is it. This show is an entertaining blast, made even more so by a dark streak in the excellent third season.

Submitted by BrianTT on January 2, 2010 - 1:17pmCHICAGO – If you’re not watching BBC America, you’re not watching some of the best television available to you.

TV Review: BBC America’s ‘Occupation’ Features Great Performances
Submitted by BrianTT on October 18, 2009 - 12:32pmCHICAGO – The American perspective on the war in Iraq has been well-documented in feature films and TV movies, but I was intrigued at the idea of seeing a British film about the Middle East, especially one with great actors like James Nesbitt and Stephen Graham.
TV Review: BBC America’s ‘Robin Hood’ Returns Darker, More Mature
Submitted by BrianTT on September 12, 2009 - 9:02amCHICAGO – BBC America’s excellent “Robin Hood” returns tonight, September 12th, with the start of what looks to be a much darker, more intense season of the hit show. Continuing to update the legend for a new generation, the writers of this edition of “Robin Hood” find clever ways to keep the spirit of classic incarnations of the timeless hero intact while making it feel fresh and new at the same time.
TV Review: BBC America’s ‘Being Human’ Highlights Truly Scary Roommates
Submitted by BrianTT on July 23, 2009 - 12:55pmCHICAGO – We are undeniably in the age of the vampire. “True Blood,” “Twilight,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” “The Vampire Diaries” - the national appetite for bloodsucking film, fiction, and television seems insatiable.
