Film Review: ‘Wish I Was Here’ Will Make You Wish You Weren’t There

Wish I Was Here

CHICAGO – Writer, director and lead actor Zach Braff has put it on the line for his latest feature, “Wish I Was Here.” He infamously used a crowd funding Kickstarter campaign to maintain creative control of the film, but he needn’t have bothered. The movie result is a sappy, high concept emotional manipulator with no basis in authenticity, and that might be the best thing that can be said about it.

Interview: Zach Braff Kickstarts His New Film ‘Wish I Was Here’

CHICAGO – Zach Braff is an amiable personality, making his mark as “J.D.” on the TV sitcom “Scrubs” and the cult film “Garden State” (2004), which he wrote and directed. For his most recent project, he made show business headlines by using the website Kickstarter to “crowd fund” his latest film, “Wish I Was Here.”

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Apparition’ Ranks as One of 2012’s Worst Films

The Apparition Blu-ray

CHICAGO – Remember that scene in “Ghostbusters” where Sigourney Weaver slides toward a hellish demon while pinned to a chair? Or the utterly chilling moment in “Ju-On” where the contorted body of a vengeful spirit crawls toward its latest victim? Or how about that little indie movie about a young couple plagued by an inexplicable onslaught of paranormal activity?

Film Review: ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2’ Takes Final Bloodless Bite

CHICAGO – Even the most hardcore, defiant fans of “The Twilight Saga” must admit that there clearly was not enough material in Stephenie Meyer’s final book to justify two films.

Film Review: ‘The Apparition’ Terrifies with Shocking Level of Incompetence

CHICAGO – “The Apparition” is so incompetently made on every single level that it’s almost difficult to put its sheer awfulness into words. I’ll do my best. Which is more than what the producers of this pile of clichéd, derivative junk can say.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1’ Comes Loaded With Special Features

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 with Kristen Stewart

CHICAGO – From the very beginning, one can tell that “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1” has been dramatically stretched to meet the running time of two feature-length films. And let’s just saying pacing was never this franchise’s strong suit to begin with. More time for moping, more time for pained expressions, more time for shirtless action equals more time for the film’s most significant problems to take over. And that’s just what they do here.

TV, DVD, BLU-RAY & THEATER REVIEWS

  • Bobby Pin Girls

CHICAGO – The “breeder years” are difficult on everyone, as the biological imperative becomes overwhelming and the couplings that result yield both discovery and misadventure. Nothing Without a Company’s new play “Bobby Pin Girls” highlight two such Millennial women, roommates who are having man trouble, although the argument can be made that it’s eternally “boy trouble.” The show has a Thursday-Sunday run at the Chicago Mosaic School through December 10th, 2017. • Transformers 5 front

CHICAGO – Knock me over with a feather kids, but I enjoyed “Transformers: The Last Knight.” Maybe it was in comparison to the others or maybe director Michael Bay has beaten me into submission, but this one had the right story elements and casting to make it work, with exceptions of course. It’s goofiness is its charm, and it was released on Blu-Ray/DVD on September 26th, 2017 (Digital HD already available).
