CHICAGOMTV has confirmed that the first single from the “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” soundtrack will be Death Cab For Cutie’s “Meet Me on the Equinox.” The song will debut exclusively on MTV’s website on the day of the MTV Video Music Awards, September 13th, 2009.

In an MTV News interview, bassist Nick Hammer said, “I think that a lot of our songs in general concern a lot of the things the main characters in the books are going through: There’s a lot of stuff about relationships beginning and ending, and the questioning that happens around being in love and falling out of love.”

While the song wasn’t specifically written for the movie, songwriter Ben Gibbard says the new songs fits with the tone of “New Moon.” He says when you hear the song you’ll know that it’s a Death Cab song.

Landing the soundtrack didn’t come easy for the Fork, Washington band. They still had to go through the same process that every other band and artist has to go through.

“We didn’t expect it would be chosen for the first single we were thinking it would be a part of the soundtrack, maybe,” the musician laughed. “I have no idea if Stephenie Meyer approved it or what. It’s been an exciting process, because we’ve been so removed from it. We were in L.A. for a week and we went into the studio and wrote and recorded the song and submitted it. We didn’t know where anything stood, and then we just got a call last week like, ‘Guess what your song has been chosen as the first single.’

“Twilight,” which stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Ashley Greene and Taylor Lautner from director Catherine Hardwicke, has grossed $178 million domestically. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” opens on November 20th, 2009 with “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” already slated for Summer 2010.
