CHICAGODAY ELEVEN of the 54th Chicago International Film Festival (CIFF) on Saturday, October 20th, 2018, is Black Perspectives Night, with a tribute to behind-the-scenes production leadership that is vital to the look of a film, through one of its best practitioners. And in the week before Halloween, the “After Dark” series goes spookily into the wee hours.

EVENTS The Black Perspectives Series – an influential category of films at the Chicago International Film Festival – honors Ruth Carter, Oscar-nominated Costume Designer for films including “Do the Right Thing,” “Amistad,” “Selma” and one of 2018’s most popular films, “Black Panther.” Actress Regina Taylor (“I’ll Fly Away”) will be moderating a perspective on Ruth Carter’s career and her notable body of work. FILM OF THE DAYCLEAN UP” (South Korea) An unusual meditation on how the past can affect lives long after that past is gone. In a symbolic parallel, “Clean Up” also refers to the profession that the two main characters share, part of a clean up crew for hire, which goes into the darkest and nastiest places… including murder scenes. The story is driven by a new member of the clean crew who shares a past event with a more veteran woman on the team. As they interact, their souls are also participating in a cleansing. Director Manki Kwon makes an appearance on behalf of the film at this screening (click here for more information).

WATCH OUT FOR the After Dark film series. Get warmed up for Halloween with two late night screenings. “Overlord” (USA) involves World War II paratroopers getting more than they bargained for when infiltrating a secret Nazi laboratory. Also check out “Neurotic Quest for Serenity” (Brazil), the hyperactive imaginings of a manic Telenovela TV star are the key to a trippy adventure in self-enlightenment.

The 54th Chicago International Film Festival primarily takes place at the AMC River East 21, 322 East Illinois Street, Chicago from October 10th to October 21st, 2018. Click here for film schedules, information and to purchase tickets.
