CHICAGO – He has been presenting the weather segments on NBC-TV’s “The Today Show” since 1996, and now serves as co-host on the program. The inimitable Al Roker is also an author of seven books, and American History is the subject in his latest “Ruthless Tide: Heroes and Villains of the Johnstown Flood.” Roker was recently in Downers Grove (Ill.) at Anderson’s Bookshop, to greet fans and sign his new book.

He was born Albert Lincoln Roker Jr. in Queens, New York, and received a B.A. in Communications at the State University of New York. While going to school, he worked as a weather anchor in Syracuse, and took the same job in Washington, D.C. after graduation in 1976. He began his affiliation with NBC when he became weatherman at their Cleveland station in 1978, and moved to the flagship WNBC in New York City five years later. Roker began substituting for Willard Scott on “The Today Show” in 1990, and became the regular weatherman on that program in 1996, eventually moving up to co-host the program, along with general personality duties on the network. “Ruthless Tide” is his seventh book.
