CHICAGO – Seann William Scott (“American Reunion”) does the best work of his career in the raunchy hockey comedy “Goon,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. Co-written by “Superbad” writer Evan Goldberg and co-star Jay Baruchel, this is a clever little sports comedy that should find a loyal audience on the home market.

Scott plays bouncer-turned-player Doug Glatt with a clever mix of innocent loyalty and self-aware sweetness. He takes a part that could have been unbearable and makes him into a very likable guy. We root for Doug because Scott grounds the character instead of turning him into the caricature that he could have become. This is a guy who didn’t think he was very good at anything and found out that he could play a role on the ice and maybe even get the girl. Scott carries the movie by presenting his journey as one that comes as a surprise to him as well as the rest of the world. The overall story of “Goon” is a bit thin and predictable but Scott and Baruchel’s ear for adult comedy make it worth a rental.
