CHICAGOFOX continues to struggle to produce a new dramatic hit, announcing this week that the highly-promoted “Terra Nova” would not return for another season of dinosaur action. The cancellation combined with Monday night’s truly dismal ratings for “Alcatraz” has given some hope to “Fringe” fans. They can’t cancel everything, can they?

“Terra Nova” proved to be a bit too expensive a program to live long on the bubble between cancellation and renewal. FOX simply cannot find the key to creating new dramas that work, going through some highly-buzzed disasters in the last few years like “The Chicago Code” and “Lone Star.” They have some interesting projects already slated for the fall, including a drama with Kevin Bacon, but with “House” leaving and “Bones” dwindling, they really need a new tentpole drama soon. Or maybe they’ll just program “American Idol” and “The X Factor” five nights a week. Stay tuned.
