CHICAGO – The 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards premiered tonight, celebrating the best acting performances of the year. The awards are voted on by the members of the Screen Actors Guild, (apparently) making the awards more meaningful to the winners as they were chosen by their peers.

The biggest award of the evening, Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, was awarded to the cast of “The Help,” which includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard, and many more. Spencer also took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (adding another win to her high stack of accolades from previous award shows, including her wins at the Critic’s Choice Awards and the Golden Globes) and Viola Davis won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

The other big winners in film were: Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role and Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”) for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

The top awards for television went to the cast of “Modern Family” (Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series) and the cast of “Boardwalk Empire” (Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series). The Lead Female Actor Television Awards went to Jessica Lange (Drama) for “American Horror Story,” Betty White (Comedy) for “Hot in Cleveland,” and Kate Winslet (TV Movie/Miniseries) for “Mildred Pierce.” The Lead Male Actor Television Awards went to Steve Buscemi (Drama) for “Boardwalk Empire,” Alec Baldwin (Comedy) for “30 Rock,” and Paul Giamatti (TV Movie/Miniseries) for “Too Big To Fail.”
