CHICAGO – Nominees in the Feature Film category for this year’s Directors Guild Awards were announced this morning and featured very familiar names, with one that may come as a surprise. While four of the five nominees were also nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes this year, David Fincher got the nod from the Directors Guild Awards.

While the Golden Globes had nominated George Clooney for “The Ides of March,” the Directors Guild gave a nomination to Fincher for his direction of the adapted film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” The other four nominations went to Woody Allen for “Midnight in Paris,” Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist,” Alexander Payne for “The Descendants,” and Martin Scorsese for “Hugo.”

The nomination for Fincher is also curious as “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” has been expected to be on the outside looking in for a Best Picture nomination at this year’s Academy Awards. However, with Fincher’s nomination the film has now received nominations from the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America (Steven Zaillian), the Producers Guild of America (Ceán Chaffin and Scott Rudin), and a nomination from the Golden Globes to Rooney Mara for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. Perhaps “Dragon Tattoo” will sneak its way into a Best Picture nomination afterall.

The Directors Guild of America will announce the nominees for its television categories tomorrow, January 10, and its nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary on Thursday, January 12.
