CHICAGO – Konami Digital Entertainment made news yesterday when announcing one of its top selling franchises was returning to gamers not once, not twice, but thrice in 2012. The survival/horror series “Silent Hill,” which first premiered in 1999 on Sony PlayStation, will have its eighth and ninth installments released in the coming months, as well as a re-release of two of its classic tales.

The first release, planned for January 24, 2012, is the re-release of “Silent Hill 2” and “Silent Hill 3” as HD collections. The games will be re-mastered in HD quality and released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The original versions, released in 2001 and 2003 respectively, were originally released for PlayStation 2 and later extended released for Xbox.

The second “Silent Hill” release of the year will come in February, when “Silent Hill: Book of Memories” is released exclusively for the brand new PlayStation Vita console. The new game, which coincides with the same month release as the new portable PlayStation console, will be the first “Silent Hill” game that includes online, co-op multiplayer.

Finally, in March 2012, “Silent Hill” will release a new installment that will be playable on Xbox 360 and PS3. “Silent Hill: Downpour” follows the story of Murphy Pendleton, a felon that escapes custody when his transport bus crashes, only to find himself trapped in Silent Hill. The installment will include side missions and chances to explore the town and put more of the mystery of Silent Hill together.
