Here is the plot description for “The Rum Diary”:

Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, “The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, which is run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins).

Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard). She’s the wildly attractive, Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson – a businessman involved in shady property development deals – is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy.

When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit or use them to take the bastards down.

Journalists

None of them can be trusted 100%, they all have bias and agendas.

I think that journalists

I think that journalists that have no integrity cannot be trusted. If you will lie, cheat, or steal when no one is looking then surely you can’t be trusted as a journalists tabloid or otherwise.

What kinds of journalists can be and cannot be trusted?

The drunken partying types of journalists, like our boy Johnny here, I would trust way more than a serious uptight journalist.

Investigative journalists

Investigative journalists embedded in foreign countries can be trusted.

The only kind of journalist

The only kind of journalist that can be trusted is one that writes with integrity and ethics. But even then, since we’re human, all stories will have a bit of ones own person agenda intertwined, so cannot be fully trusted.

Rum Diary Trust Issues

It all boils down to personality. The journalists that are all about the story “right now” and aren’t capable of looking you in the eyes or remembering names after the fact. You can always tell who is in it for the money and who genuinely cares about helping others.

What kinds of journalists can be and cannot be trusted?

I guess journalists that go for financial gain and write things to influence their own opinion on the general public.
