Here is the plot description for “The Rum Diary”:
Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, “The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, which is run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins).
Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard). She’s the wildly attractive, Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson – a businessman involved in shady property development deals – is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy.
When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit or use them to take the bastards down.

“journalists” who write for The Sun, The National Enquirer, and other such tabloids cannot be trusted as they are the ones who are sued most for the distorted and sensational stories.
What Journalists can be trusted
IMHO - the only journalists that can be trusted are the ones that have no political ties. Also the ones that write for the various tabloid “scandal” type newspapers are not to be trusted at all. They only are after the untrue dirt of anyone that can and do make headlines.

In my opinion, I trust journalists that present a factual account of the topic they are reporting on without a heavy influence of their own opinion or beliefs. Journalists that appear untrustworthy would be those writing tabloid stories or stories generated without any factual information. Unfortunately, there are so many untrustworthy journalists in the world that the reliable groups are often difficult to distinguish.

It’s hard to say nowadays
It’s hard to say nowadays what journalist can be trusted. I definitely think social/gossip journalism is the last group of journalism to be trusted. But also our everyday news media tends to be quite sensational as well. I think the most trusted journalism today would be more independent news publications and academic journals. These things tend to be thouroughly researched and present more comprehensive publications.

A individual’s reputation, more so than area or field would be a determining factor.
