CHICAGO – Remember when you went to see “I Am Legend” at an IMAX screen in 2007 more because you wanted to watch a six minute trailer before the film than an apocalyptic Will Smith movie itself? Well, get ready to map out your way to the nearest IMAX theater again this December.

Back in 2007, Warner Brothers released the first six minutes of “The Dark Knight” before screenings of “I Am Legend” at IMAX theaters. The first six minutes, the initial bank robbery building the legend of the Joker, came a full eight months before the film hit theaters and gave fans just enough to bare those remaining days before the film’s release.

Playing off the success of this, Warner has once again decided to use this marketing technique of bringing scenes from the next Batman film before another blockbuster film. On December 21, when you sit down with your popcorn and soda to watch “Mission Impossible- Ghost Protocol” at an IMAX theater, you will also be treated to the first six minutes of “The Dark Knight Rises.”

The third (and apparently final) Christopher Nolan Batman film will hit theaters July 20, 2012, placing the six minute preview a full seven months before the full film is seen. “The Dark Knight Rises” will once again star Christian Bale as Batman and boasts a supporting cast that includes Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Michael Cane, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

After a very successful showing from “The Dark Knight,” both in critical review and total gross, it is not a stretch to call “The Dark Knight Rises” the most anticipated film for the summer of 2012, a summer that includes many blockbuster movies. Hopefully for fans, summer 2012 can come a little sooner with the first six minutes of the new film holding them over for seven months.
