CHICAGO – Christopher Lloyd, Executive Producer of the hit ABC comedy series “Modern Family,” has revealed a list of secrets that will all become a part of the new season of the show. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lloyd spilled about the storylines of the third season of the show, as well as an addition to the family.

The third season of the show, which premieres tonight on ABC at 8 p.m. CST, will begin with a family vacation to a dude ranch. Lloyd told EW that the vacation will feature Gloria (Sofia Vergara) riding a horse:

We have in the past asked [Sofia Vergara] things like ‘Can you sing badly?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ So we put that in an episode,” Lloyd said. “‘Can you shoot a gun?’ I think she only had to look at us to answer that question. Like: ‘Are you kidding? Of course, I can shoot a gun!” So we put that in an episode. And the horseback riding was her most withering glance as an answer. Like: ‘Yes. I grew up in Colombia. What do you think, I can’t ride a horse?’ So yes, we will be exploiting that talent of hers in the dude-ranch episode.”

The other secrets that Lloyd revealed are: Cam (Eric Stonestreet) forcing himself to stop over-coddling Lilly, Phil (Ty Burrell) fearing death is coming for him when his lifetime supply of razors is almost gone, Phil and Luke (Nolan Gould) attempting tight-rope in the backyard, Claire (Julie Bowen) having a wild night on the town after Phil and Haley (Sarah Hyland) go to visit Phil’s alma mater, a reappearance of Gloria’s ex-husband Javier (Benjamin Bratt), Manny (Rico Rodriguez) getting in trouble with the law, Gloria and Cam going salsa dancing, Alex (Aerial Winter),a freshman, and Haley, a senior, sharing a math class together, and a special Thanksgiving episode that may include pumpkin launching.

If all of that news wasn’t exciting enough, there is an even bigger story: Cam and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) adopting a baby boy.

We want to explore the actual, sometimes arduous process of getting a child,” Lloyd said. “Auditions for surrogate mothers. Dealing with lawyers. The anxiety of wondering if they’re prepared to have a boy in the house because they both felt a little bit more comfortable with having a girl… So they go through the steps, the highs and lows, some of the disappointments that are involved in bringing a baby into the house. And then we’ll get to the actual child at some point during the season.”

All of these revelations are set to come into play in the new season of “Modern Family,” which premieres tonight in an extended hour of laughs on ABC, after the hour-long third season return of the series “The Middle.”
