CHICAGO – Warner Bros. on Thursday released an official production picture for audiences to take a first look at the new Superman and his new suit, set to be appearing in the series’ next installment “Superman: Man of Steel.” Different from his usual poised and tall stature we have come to know Superman for, the image shows the Metropolis Marvel hunched and ready to pounce into action with his red cape waving behind him and the iconic ‘S’ displayed broadly on his chest.

The summer of 2011 may be the most superhero-packed season the film world has ever seen. Audiences have dodged the heat and hit the theaters for “Thor,” “X-Men: First Class,” “Green Lantern,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” but that isn’t even the end to the superhero excitement. Both “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” have released teaser trailers for the films that are releasing next summer, and now Superman is getting in on the action.

Henry Cavill (“Stardust” and “The Tudors”) will be portraying Clark Kent/Superman when the film hits the silver screen on June 14, 2013. The cast also includes Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon and, now officially confirmed, Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond as the hero’s Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara.

“Superman: Man of Steel” is currently in production in Chicago with Zack Snyder (“Watchmen” and “300”) directing the series’ sixth installment. Also tagged onto the project as story writer and producer is Christopher Nolan (“Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” and “The Dark Knight Rises”), a name that (combined with the gothic picture released today) could signal a change in the style and tone of Superman to a much darker and realistic interpreting.
