Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Boondock Saints: Truth & Justice Edition’
CHICAGO – The word “phenomenon” is too liberally thrown by critics but it absolutely applies to “Boondock Saints,” a movie that made no waves at all upon its initial release but now has an incredibly loyal following, enough so that Fox has released yet-another edition of the movie to mark its tenth anniversary — “The Boondock Saints: Truth & Justice Edition.” Is the double dip worth your dime?
Synopsis: “Experience the raw power and heart-pounding thrills of The Boondock Saints like never before with this must-own Truth & Justice Edition. An all-new bonus feature takes you deeper into their gritty action-packed world than you ever thought possible.
Two Irish brothers (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) become righteous vigilantes when they make a pact to battle Boston’s criminal underworld. But standing in their way are the ruthless Russian mafia and a dogged FBI agent (Willem Dafoe). Secrets will be revealed and loyalties tested as the brothers unleash their explosive vengeance on a relentless quest for truth and justice!”
The funny thing about this release is the last Blu-ray edition of “The Boondock Saints” actually came out much closer to the 10th anniversary of the film than this one. I guess “12 Anniversary Edition” doesn’t sound as cool. After floating around Hollywood as one of its hottest scripts for years and going through a tumultuous production, “The Boondock Saints” was quietly released in January of 1999 and barely made a dent in the national conversation, grossing just over $30k. Critics hated it. No one saw it.

Welcome to the power of DVD. According to some reports, “The Boondock Saints” has made $50 million through DVD sales and rentals and has developed such a following that it even produced a sequel. People LOVE “The Boondock Saints.”
But do they love it enough to buy it again? The one new special feature on this release is a good one. It’s a retrospective look back at the history of the film and the cult that has built up around it called “The Boondock Saints: The Film and the Phenomenon.” No mere filler, the piece runs almost half an hour and features key players reminiscing about the production and how it changed their lives. Fans will love it. Do 28 minutes of interviews warrant a double dip for you? Only you can answer that. I don’t love the film enough to consider that worth the price but I imagine many of its fans do. Just don’t be surprised if they release a “15th Anniversary” edition soon.
