CHICAGO – The Batcave is buzzing about the two new cast members confirmed for “The Dark Knight Rises,” the third installment in Christopher Nolan’s phenomenally successful reboot of the Batman franchise.

In a press release from Warner Brothers, Nolan announced that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, and Tom Hardy has been cast as Bane. Both villain roles are ripe for reinvention since they were both reduced to walking sight gags in “Catwoman” (2004) and “Batman and Robin” (1997), respectively.

Hathaway’s star has been on the rise after her successful leap from Disney starlet (in 2001’s “The Princess Diaries”) to Oscar-nominated actress (in 2008’s “Rachel Getting Married”). Her name appeared in the list of actresses auditioning for one of two female roles in “Dark Knight Rises” last week.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story,” Nolan said.

Hardy has been a confirmed member of the cast since last October, yet few online rumors had attached his name to Bane. After demonstrating his scene-stealing charisma in last year’s blockbuster “Inception,” Hardy’s popularity is poised to explode in Summer 2012.

“I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies,” Nolan said.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is set to hit theaters July 20, 2012. The film will co-star Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his wife, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. Composer James Newton Howard is rumored to once again be collaborating with Hans Zimmer on the score.
