The Matrix Reloaded”

HollywoodChicago.com Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

The pain we still collectively feel over the way that “The Matrix” trilogy played out has somewhat overshadowed the elements of “Matrix Reloaded” and, yes, even “Matrix Revolutions” that actually work. For one, these movies were conceived and designed for the era of High Definition. There’s a reason the first film was one of the most popular ever on DVD and the movies look even better on Blu-ray. “Matrix Reloaded” plays better now a few years removed from the hype surrounding it and the inferior closing act of the trilogy. The underground rave scene is still stunningly horrible but scenes like the freeway chase and a few of the climactic final ones work beautifully in HD. If you didn’t buy the full set and have been waiting to get “Matrix Reloaded” on its own, now’s your chance.

“The Matrix” ended in such a blaze of promising glory. The potential of storytelling within this clear franchise-in-the-making was limitless. I think one of the reasons people still express disappointment over “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” is that we imagined so many exciting adventures for Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, and the gang that the bar was set so high that the Wachowski brothers were sure to fall under it. Don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot to hate about both of these films and they pale in comparison to the 5-star original, but “Reloaded” isn’t as bad as you remember. It features some technically-daring sequences and they’re presented in a gorgeous HD transfer with the kind of master audio track that you could use to show off your new stereo system. It’s also worth noting that this release includes hours of special features from commentary tracks to picture-in-picture featurettes. It’s a beautiful release for a film that we wish was just a little more beautiful on its own.

Synopsis: “In the second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) continue to lead the revolt against the Machine Army. In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo’s pivotal role in the fate of mankind.”
