The Good Wife: The First Season”

HollywoodChicago.com DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0

Easily one of the most successful new programs of the last year was CBS’ “The Good Wife.” The network has become familiar with creating smash commercial hits with the turn of every fall season but it’s been awhile since they had a truly monumental critical success like “The Good Wife,” a show that just won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress (Archie Panjabi) and was straight-up robbed for Best Actress (Juliana Margulies). It was also nominated for the most Outstanding Dramatic Series of the year, a rare occurrence for a new program. It’s a hit in every measurable way.

The Good Wife: The First Season will be released on DVD on September 14th, 2010.

And for good reason. It takes watching only one episode of “The Good Wife” to realize how masterfully crafted this program is in every way. It’s slick, fast-paced, and clever without ever losing the characters under the “legal drama” sheen. The writers and the incredibly-talented cast never allow the stories to devolve into the melodrama that a program like this easily could have become. One of the reasons I love “The Good Wife” is that it shouldn’t work on paper. The story of a put-upon wife of a disgraced official (Chris Noth) becoming low woman on the totem pole at a high-profile law firm sounds like a recipe for cliched disaster. In my profession, I’ve seen dozens of lackluster legal dramas. There’s nothing lackluster about “The Good Wife.” And the show kept getting stronger as the cast grew deeper into their characters. This is a program that I expect will be earning accolades and Emmys for years to come.

“The Good Wife: The First Season” is presented in a widescreen aspect ratio with a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound Track. This is such a beautifully-produced program that I wish it was available on Blu-ray and it’s illogical that it’s not but DVD will have to do for now.

Special Features:
o Deleted Scenes With Commentary
o On-Air Promos
o “The Education of Alicia Florrick: Making Season One”
o “Aftermath: Real-Life Events”
o Audio Commentaries on Episode 1.1 (“Pilot”), Episode 1.16 (“Fleas”), and Episode 1.17 (“Heart”)

‘The Good Wife: The First Season’ is released by CBS/Paramount and stars Juliana Margulies, Josh Charles, Archie Panjabi, Christine Baranski, Matt Czuchry, and Chris Noth. It will be released on September 14th, 2010. It is not rated and runs 996 minutes.
