Announcing the winners of the "Best of the Midwest Awards"

Patrick McDonald reports on the events and the winners.

CHICAGO, IL – As a follow-up to yesterday’s article, here are the list of winners from December 2nd’s “Best of the Midwest Awards,” which recognizes the filmmakers and films from 2008 who participated in the Midwest Independent Film Festival, first Tuesdays every month at the Landmark Cinema in Chicago.

The festival’s representing director, Mike McNamara, was master of ceremonies for the sold out event. Presenters included Sun-Times columnist/TV movie host Richard Roeper, WGN-TV’s entertainment guru, Dean Richards, and The Director of the Illinois Film Office, Betsy Steinberg.

Chicago film luminaries in attendance included John McNaughton, director of “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer,” Steve James, creator of the famed documentary “Hoop Dreams” and Tim Evans of Steppenwolf Theater’s Film Division.

Steve James

Steve James (who’s mentioned in Patrick McDonald’s excellent Midwest Independent Film Festival roundup above) is also the director of the excellent documentary “At the Death House Door”.

I interviewed him in Chicago in 2008 and appeared live with him on the Mancow show. If you haven’t checked out that documentary, it’s one you won’t soon forget.

THEATER, TV, DVD & BLU-RAY REVIEWS

  • Amelia

CHICAGO – It seems downright sad that “Amelia,” a movie that was so widely predicted to be a part of the 2009 awards season, would be released on Blu-ray and DVD on the same day as the Oscar announcements. On paper, “Amelia” seemed like Oscar bait through and through with important subject matter headlined by one of the few women to have more than one Oscar. On Blu-ray, it’s easy to see why this cinematic plane crashed and burned.

  • Fear and Loathing BD

CHICAGO – I know what you’re thinking: What do “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Mystic River” have in common? Nothing at all other than a Blu-ray release date of February 2nd, 2010. Oh, and they’re two films you should probably own if you have a Blu-ray player.
