Johnny Depp has landed in Chicago for 'Public Enemies' filming!

While there is a lot of conjecture about filming dates and locations for “Public Enemies,” we can report this as fact.

Public Enemy Filming Location

I received a notice on my apartment door that they will be filming in the alley behind my apartment building. It is the alley between Cornelia to the North and NewPort to the South, close to the Sheffield Intersection. There will be no parking on Cornelia from Wilton to Sheffield, no driving (local access only) on Newport, and limited traffic on clark street and Sheffield.

This is scheduled for the evening of April 1st, from 7:00pm - 5:00am, and April 2nd, from 7:00pm - 5:00am. Hope this helps.

PS- They were towing cars this morning. The old vehicles they are using for the film are being housed at a garage on Halsted/Addison.

thanks for the info. i am going to try to head down there tommorrow? Have you anything new to report? seen anything interesting? i live about an hour outside the city i know you can’t give an exact address (and i wouldn’t want you too, but directions aren’t really my thing so any help you can give would be truly appreciated) i would be coming from I55 onto lakeshore dr. where from there? unless you could recommend another highway that is better to access? thanks again it was cool of you to give a heads up

More Public Enemies Filming

Tomorrow day through tomorrow night, they will still be filming in the same location. Update: the primary set for this shoot is at the intersection of Newport and Sheffield/Clark. Traffic is restricted on Newport Ave. After watching the filming for about 2 hours tonight, they have revived two of the period el cars with extras inside for effect (it passes by while they are filming). Scenes shot tonight included some within period specific cars, (they brought in a snow making truck) so it should be winter in the film. From what I gathered, the extras/actors were staging in the back alley behind Dark Horse Tavern until they were called for use.

For directions from lake shore drive going North: Exit on Belmont, head West to Clark Street, make right (North) and you can’t miss it, approximately four blocks on right.

PS- do not be disappointed if you do not see Depp or Bale, they’ve been kind of hard to spot, and crowds have gathered to watch the filming.

your directions were perfect. i went down about 10:30 pm and stayed til about 1:30. We did see christian bale and channing tatum. it was alot of fun,the locals were hilarious and the crew and police were really friendly, answering questions…i am very grateful for the info! i hear johnny showed up a while later, but my friend had to work or i would still probably be there! if you get anymore scoop on chicago film sites please post. be blessed!

Does anyone know if filming is taking place tonight, April 4th?!? I know they are filming in Aurora on Saturday and Sunday. Is Johnny going to be staying in Chicago this evening?

I’m not sure about April 4, 2008, but here is confirmed information I have uncovered about upcoming Aurora, Ill. shooting for “Public Enemies” (source):

Paramount To Be Location For Hollywood Movie

The Paramount Theater has signed a contract to film the Johnny Depp movie, “Public Enemies” in Aurora this spring. Filming will take place April 6 and 7 at the theater in downtown Aurora. “Public Enemies” is the story of the life and death of John Dillinger, the gangster who was killed by federal agents in Chicago.

The Internet Movie Database lists Depp, Christian Bale and recent Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard as the stars of the movie. The movie stars Depp as Dillinger, the gangster who was shot outside the north side Biograph Theater on July 22, 1934. According to Variety, Christian Bale may sign on to play Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who tracked Dillinger to the theater.

This would be second movie filmed in Aurora in less than a year. In October 2007, “The Express” – the story of the first black Heisman Trophy winner – filmed a scene in downtown Aurora.

Here’s a link to pictures I’ve taken over the past couple days (including tonight). All of these are from the filming taking place at Clark/Newport in Wrigleyville. They’ve created a “shantytown” under the L tracks and have laid down some surfacing that makes parts of Newport Ave look like the street is brick. They have also placed a large ad sign on the side of the building reflecting the period. They have put up old lightposts and there are about 10 old cars lining the street (and a few driving around). It also looks like they are doing a significant amount of filming in the building located at the corner of Newport/Clark behind the liquor store.

One of the other additional cool things is they are running an old elevated train on the tracks back and forth over Newport. From being down there, looks like the filming will continue all night (and again tomorrow night, based on the notifications we’ve received on our doors from Universal). They have Newport from Halsted to Clark blocked off, and it was a little difficult to get access to our apartment, but it looks like the best place to check things out will be at Clark/Newport.

Anyway, the pictures aren’t perfect (especially the ones at night) but gives you a little feel for what’s going on.

Movie Location

I live in the building on Clark and Newport where the filming of Public Enemies is taking place. The second story apartment is the home of Depp’s movie girlfriend. FBI agents (Christian) will stake-out in the shanty town under the el tracks and spy on the building. They also shot all of the actor’s mugshots there as well. Good group of people, especially the girls cooperating with the use of their apartments during the shoot. I haven’t seen Johnny yet, but he has been hanging out at our place. Perhaps after the Cubs game I will invite him to a few Wrigleyville establishments.
