EXPERIENCE BRITTEN WITH A PERSONAL CONNECTION. One of Britten’s close collaborators was conductor Steuart Bedford, who conducted the first staged performance of Owen Wingrave in 1973, and will join Chicago Opera Theater for this much anticipated production featuring baritone Matthew Worth in the title role. The opera is based on a Henry James story about a young man with strong pacifist convictions who refuses to join the army against his military family’s wishes. This new production features two legendary singers—Robin Leggate, who won raves for singing von Aschenbach in COT’s Death in Venice in 2004, and Rebecca Caine, the original Cosette in Les Misérables. The dynamic duo of director Ken Cazan and designer Peter Harrison bring their remarkable creativity to Owen Wingrave as they did to the COT’s past productions of Death in Venice and Duke Bluebeard’s Castle.

Sung in English with English supertitles.
