CHICAGO – After a delay that lasted well in excess of a year, “24” returns to FOX this Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 from 7 to 9 p.m. with a two-hour “special event” (they used to just be called “TV movies”) called “24: Redemption”.
CHICAGO – “Wow! I feel like I’m at a rock concert!” “Me too. It’s like I want to rush the stage!”
While overhearing this conversation between two young women at the recent Chicago opening of “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” I realized there were no better words to sum up Drury Lane’s recent jukebox-blaring, toe-tapping homage to one of the greatest rock and rollers of all time.
The Two Bobby Fischers
Calling Bobby Fischer an “eccentric” is like calling the town drunk a “social drinker.” That dude was batsh*t crazy.
A great film about chess, is of course, ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer.’ (1993), which depicts the miracle of having a chess prodigy for a son (and trying to derive some normalcy around it). My favorite line is from Joe Mantenga (playing the chess prodigy’s father), when he talks about being in awe of his son’s gift for chess, in the midst of institutional education not understanding. It is courageous.
Also, one of my best friends from high school is named Bobby Fischer. Same spelling. Used to drive him crazy, but not as crazy as the other Fischer. I thought of Bobby (my friend) when the famous BF died.
