Judge Dredd Relaunch Takes a Meeting

15 hours 31 min ago
In 1995, the 2000 A.D. anti-hero Judge Dredd was brought to the big screen in the form of Sylvester Stallone, and it bombed pretty badly after being trashed by critics. It was generally known to be one of the worst comic book adaptations in a decade rife with them. Roughly two months ago, it was announced that 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland was tackling the screenplay for another attempt at a Dredd movie for DNA Films, and over the weekend, comic artist Mark Simpson who draws under the pen name "Jock" mentioned the fact that he had a meeting to talk about the Judge Dredd movie on Monday. i.e. today. (Writer Andy Diggle may also be involved with this meeting, although he's being slightly more coy about it if so.) Our British readers will realize that Jock...

New Moon Fails to Beat Dark Knight's Opening Weekend

November 22, 2009 - 1:00am
Despite setting new records for a midnight opening with $26.27 million at 3,514 theaters and single day opening with $72.7 million from 4,024 theaters, Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: New Moon ended up with $140.7 million domestically for the three-day weekend. That means it's the third-biggest opening domestically, trailing the opening weekend record of The Dark Knight 's $158 million and also is behind Spider-Man 3 's $151.1 million. Having said that, "New Moon" did open worldwide to $258.8 million, which, in terms of superhero movies, was only beat by Spider-Man 3 's $381.7 million. The top worldwide opening of $394 million was set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last July. Spider-Man 3 ranks second on that list and "New...

November 21, 2009 - 1:00am
A few years ago, director James McTeigue helmed an adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd's V For Vendetta and in recent months, there's been talk of Warner Bros. maybe getting him to tackle one of their DC superheroes. When ComingSoon.net recently spoke to him about his new movie Ninja Assassin which opens next Wednesday, November 25, we did broach the subject, and while he was non-committal about even preferring to work with one DC character over another, he did share some interesting thoughts on the subject of superhero movies: ComingSoon.net: Over the last few months, there've been rumors about you being in talks with Warner Bros. about doing some superhero stuff. Is that something you've been seriously considering or would that not be possible if you do those...

Natalie Portman on Why She did Thor

November 21, 2009 - 1:00am
Ever since Natalie Portman signed on to play Dr. Don Blake's love interest Jane Foster in Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Thor , the actress hasn't done a ton of interviews, so we haven't had much of a chance to learn about her take on the character. At the press conference for Jim Sheridan's Brothers , a terrific drama in which Portman is quite astounding as a young mother whose husband is a soldier who has gone missing and presumed dead in Afghanistan, we tried our best to broach the subject, trying to find out why she decided to do it, having already starred in one comic book movie ( V for Vendetta ) as well as starring in one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all time. (Do we even have to name it?) We also were hoping to find out what sort of research or comics she might have...

It makes sense since Sherlock Holmes also stars Robert Downey Jr., of course. The Guy Ritchie-directed film opens Christmas Day. THEATER, TV, DVD & BLU-RAY REVIEWS

  • The Ugly Truth

CHICAGO – Here’s an alleged romantic comedy as clueless about romance as it is about comedy. It has a premise designed to illustrate how women think with their minds, while men think with their nether regions. Yet the male and female leads of “The Ugly Truth” are practically indistinguishable from each other.

  • Near Dark

CHICAGO – It’s funny the way that the Blu-Ray market has developed in that success of a new title can often bring an old one to the HD format more quickly than it otherwise would get there. In the case of the great “Near Dark,” it’s the success of two films, one that shares a theme (“The Twilight Saga: New Moon”) and one that shares director Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”). Whatever the reason, don’t fail to include arguably the best vampire movie ever made in your collection.
