Kaboom: ‘The Dark Knight’ Explodes Brach’s Candy Building

CHICAGO – As first reported here on Aug. 14, 2007, “The Dark Knight” at 2:18 p.m. on Aug. 29, 2007 exploded the former Brach’s Candy building in Chicago.

The FOX Chicago helicopter captured excellent footage of the action. The following images are courtesy of FOX Chicago. They show the explosion before, during and after.

4:03 p.m. update: One of my sources for this story (“Sam PH”) just submitted to me photos he captured from being on location.

He also had this to say:

They did a test run with a group of nurses sprinting from the building followed by a slow-tracking shot of a walking doctor or nurse.

First to go was a walkway between the main building and the parking garage. Nurses were seen running as chunks of concrete began flying.

Then came the main explosions. It was very noisy with a tremendously hot fireball that could be felt from across Cicero.

The action has also been filmed and put online here. FOX Chicago’s latest news coverage can be found here. USA Today picked this up here.

11:05 a.m. update on 8/30/07: On Wednesday night, I was also e-mailed about this being captured on video and uploaded to YouTube.

It was real. Warner Bros. bought the building and actually imploded it.

It amazes me how much goes

It amazes me how much goes into some of the movies nowadays. I actually watched The Dark Night for the first time a couple of weeks and can actually remember this season (if I remember correctly!). I presume this was for the hospital scene and the “slow-tracking shot of a walking doctor or nurse” was the joker walking away from blowing up the hospital? I wonder what would happen if something should go wrong, for example in filming the shot. Would they move on to another location and blow up another building!? James

TV, DVD, BLU-RAY & THEATER REVIEWS

  • La Haine

CHICAGO – With NATO protests about to descend on Chicago, “La Haine” seems to have as much power as it did on its release almost twenty years ago. It is a visceral, draining experience about class struggles, increased diversity in Paris, economic inequality, and unchanneled rage. In other words, it’s a perfect choice for a Criterion Blu-ray upgrade as the Occupy Movement prepares to descend on the Windy City.

  • One for the Money Blu-ray

CHICAGO – With each passing year, Katherine Heigl’s claims about Judd Apatow’s sexism appear increasingly absurd. While Apatow is producing A-grade work from female filmmakers, such as “Bridesmaids” and HBO’s “Girls,” Heigl is portraying shallow ditzes who are susceptible to chauvinistic, overgrown adolescents. “The Ugly Truth,” “Killers,” “Life as We Know It” and “New Years Eve” is not a track record worth bragging about.
